In
the high mountains it is still winter, but in the valleys
Spring arrives with a burst of blossom
and greenery. Water courses through the ancient canals
of Annecy as the snowmelt raises the water levels
in the rivers and lakes.
Suddenly the restaurants are putting tables outside
for lunch in the towns and the swans are courting
on the lake.
Birds are displaying and competing for mates
as the summer migrants come back from Africa to build
their nests in Europe. |

Parts
of the mountain that have been covered in snow
are revealed to the walker and the mountain
biker. Paths wander through the mountains opening up
dramatic views and giving you the chance to test yourself on challenging
terrain. The animals that live on the
high mountain are easier to see at this time of the year too.
Bouquetin and Chamois are just
below the snow line enjoying the spring flowers after
a meagre winter diet, building up strength for the summer.

This
is also the time of year to repair the damages of winter.
New roofs with traditional wooden shingles are
dismantled and repaired filling the valleys with the sound of
distant hammering and sawing.
Cattle are brought out from the chalets
and driven up the mountain in the ancient tradition of transhumance.
